AP Environmental Science Students Adopt Trail at Raccoon Creek State Park

Mr. Whipkey’s AP Environmental Science class has partnered with Raccoon Creek State Park
to adopt the trail at Frankfort Mineral Springs. Over the next year, students will serve as
stewards of the trail while gaining hands-on experience in conservation and environmental
resource management.

As part of the project, students will participate in trail maintenance, remove litter, repair and
improve trail signage, and monitor the area for issues such as erosion, downed trees, damaged
facilities, and vandalism. Significant concerns will be reported to park staff.

The project provides students with an opportunity to apply AP Environmental Science
concepts in a real-world setting. While working at Frankfort Mineral Springs, students will
explore ecosystems, biodiversity, invasive species, soil and water resources, human impacts,
and conservation practices. The experience will also strengthen teamwork, problem-solving,
environmental monitoring, and community-service skills.

Through this partnership, students are demonstrating an important lesson of
environmental science: protecting our environment is not simply something we study—it
is something we actively participate in.
