March 1 Mask Optional Reminder; Additional Guidance Per CDC

February 28, 2022–As a reminder to Shaker Heights Schools staff and families, the District will adjust its masking guidelines effective Tuesday, March 1.

The District respects the different choices everyone will make regarding whether to wear a mask. All students and adults should take responsibility for creating a safe and respectful environment for our entire community.

In addition, the CDC announced on Friday its updated masking guidance, which includes lifting masking requirements for school- and child care-related transportation.

Beginning Tuesday, March 1, the District’s mask protocols are as follows:

  • PreK-12: Masks will be optional for students, staff, visitors and volunteers while in school buildings and on all school buses, including for field trips and extracurricular activities.
  • Innovative Center Students and Staff: Masks will be optional for students, staff, visitors and volunteers while in the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning space at the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building. Because the City of Shaker Heights mask mandate is in effect for city buildings, masks will be required in all other areas of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building.
Please note, per current CDC and ODH guidance, any student or staff member who returns to school following a COVID-19 diagnosis and five-day isolation period is required to wear a mask for five days in lieu of a 10-day quarantine. Unvaccinated students and staff who have been exposed as a close contact of an individual with COVID-19 are also required to wear a mask for 10 days under the State of Ohio’s Mask-to-Stay policy to be eligible to continue to attend school.

This change in guidance is dependent on continued low COVID-19 case rates within our schools and our community. Accordingly, families and staff should continue to report any COVID-19 cases through the District’s COVID-19 Case Reporting Google Form.
